In in Foshan, south China, there are martial arts schools on every street corner. Ip Man is the undisputed martial arts champion, yet he has not devoted himself to teaching. Despite this, it seems that all the kung fu masters of the city are eager to fight him to improve their reputation. Written by Riccardo Amadori.

Ip Man has quenched our thirst of a real good martial art movie where we don't just watch man kicking asses but where we can appreciate the man's moral and virtues. The movie flows well, from the view of the kungfu street of Fo Shan, to the introduction of Ip Man, and so on. Scene by scene are there in a well done play, and when someone had to display martial art act, they don't just throw bunch of minions out from nowhere to have him beating them all over.

I think the scenario is well written.

Fight choreography is great. Different approach from what we usually see, people doing flashy flying kicks and sorts; since it is about wing chun, feet hardly ever leave the ground but it doesn't decrease the beauty and flashiness of the fights. People may complain about bits that might not fit the real condition of those era.

Well, I think producers have to make sure they made entertaining movies, not documentaries. Last words, Donnie Yuen has always been a good martial art actor, he just never get the spotlight. And finally as Ip Man he gets to stand on where he deserves. Looking for some great streaming picks?

When he attempts to get a recommendation letter from the Chinese Benevolent Association, he finds that the martial arts masters are furious with one of Ip Man's students who teaches Kung Fu to Americans. Meanwhile, discrimination against Chinese is making things even more tense as Ip Man has to stand up for his fellow countrymen as well.

Written by heyitsnuel. Like all 3 films before this one the plots are based on real historic events, and in order for ALL audience to get the "message" and create a contrast of the two sides so they can root for the good guys, filmakers always exaggerates, e.

It's the type of risk the investors nowadays might not want to take if the "message" isn't clear. So here we are with the film as it is. The portrayed Americans are unrealistically dumb, and their dialogue seem like it came out of a high school play. There's a bunch of scenes which all they do is provoke a fight and be as bad as they can be.

For the audience these parts are extremely uncomfortable to watch, and awkward. But after these scenes everything's back to normal for a while. The fight scenes are superb, just great. The Chinese actors all did a wonderful job of acting, even though I think they should speak Mandarin to each other instead of one guy Mandarin and the other guy Cantonese.

Haters and patriots are not going to like it because it's a film made mainly for Chinese audience, but we're here to see some fights so don't get sucked into all that political propaganda. Although the Wing Chun master Ip Man is the most skilled martial artist in Foshan, he is unassuming and maintains an almost invisible profile. As an independently wealthy man, he feels no need to accept any disciples and instead spends his days training, meeting with friends, and spending time with his family. However, his wife is often resentful of the time he spends training and discussing martial arts with friends and colleagues. Though not a professional martial artist, Ip is respected in Foshan due to the abilities he displays in friendly, closed-door competitions with local masters.

Ip's reputation is further enhanced when he defeats an aggressive, rude, highly skilled Northern Chinese martial arts master, Jin Shanzhao, thus upholding the regional pride of fellow Southern stylists and others in Foshan.

The Japanese invasion in adversely affects the life of everyone in Foshan. The Imperial Japanese Army claims Ip's house and repurpose it into their Foshan military headquarters. Ip and his family lose their wealth and are forced to move into a decrepit apartment. Desperate to support his family, Ip finds work at a coal mine.

The Japanese General Miura, a Karate master, establishes an arena where Chinese martial artists compete with his military trainees. Li Zhao, a former police officer and Ip's acquaintance, now works as an interpreter for the Japanese army. He offers the martial artists working at the coal mine the chance to earn a bag of rice for every match they win. At first, Ip declines to fight. However, when his friend Lin disappears after taking part in a match, Ip agrees to participate in order to find out what happened to his friend.

Ip watches fellow Foshan martial arts practitioner, Master Liu, defeat one karateka, but then Liu requests to fighting three at once and loses.

When Liu attempts to collect the winning bag of rice from the first match, Miura's second in-command, Colonel Sato, shoots and kills him. Miura points Sato's own gun to his head and threatens to personally execute him if he fires in the dojo again. Upon seeing the shooting, Ip deduces that Lin was beaten and killed after an earlier fight. Barely containing his rage, Ip demands a match with ten karateka at once. Despite having not practiced Wing Chun since the Japanese occupied Foshan to conserve energy and thus save food for his familyhe mercilessly defeats them all with a brutal and effective barrage of blows, showing none of the restraint he exhibited in earlier matches.

His skill arouses the interest of Miura, who wants to learn more about Ip and watch him fight again. Ip later visits his friend, Chow Ching-chuen, who owns and runs a cotton mill in Foshan. Chow's son tells Ip that a bandit gang led by Jin is harassing the workers and trying to extort money from them. Ip finally consents to teaching others and trains the workers in Wing Chun for self-defense.Behind every great man there lies a teacher, and this was certainly true of Bruce Lee, who claimed as his mentor a martial arts expert named Ip Man A genius of Wushu or the Chinese martial arts schoolIp Man grew up in a China nearly ripped to pieces by racial hatred, nationalistic strife and warfare.

He rose like a phoenix above these ashes, however, courtesy of his participation in matches against various Wushu masters and kung-fun warriors - ultimately training martial arts icons such as Lee.
